WHEAT is a Southern African feminist grant-maker supporting women-led groups working on violence against women, economic justice, HIV and AIDS and health, sexual and reproductive rights, young women and girls, women refugee groups, sexual minorities, sustainability, accountability and good governance.
WHEAT is committed to empowering women from rural and peri-urban areas in Southern Africa. WHEAT gives grants to women-led Community Based Organizations (CBOs) working in their communities that would not yet be able to access formal funding for various reasons; including pending registration, pending opening a bank account or skills that still need to be learned within the small organization. In addition, WHEAT supports these CBOs when they need to learn new skills that would promote their outreach in a more professional and visible manner. WHEAT encourages CBOs to gain accountability and good governance. WHEAT helps women become community leaders.
WHEAT Women's Fund is a grantmaking organisation that promotes a culture of giving to develop grassroots women's leadership to achieve social, economic and gender justice.
The name WHEAT comes from our history. We were previously known as the Women's Hope Education and Training Trust, or WHEAT Trust.
Vision:
WHEAT Women's Fund envisages a Southern Africa where all women enjoy their human rights and have access to education, training and sustainable incomes, made possible by promoting a culture of giving.
