Founded
1983

Founded in 1983 to promote stronger partnerships between organized philanthropy and Latino communities, HIP has developed into a transnational network of grantmakers committed to strengthening Latino communities across the Americas.

As a membership organization, HIP seeks to share with funders the needs of the Latino community. To this end, we sponsor regional, national and international conferences and briefings, research and publications, professional development programs, as well as providing referrals for foundations seeking Latino staff and trustees.

In addition, HIP seeks to increase resources for the Latino civil sector by leading a funding collaborative, which focuses foundation, corporate, government and individual dollars on supporting Latino nonprofits. Concentrating specifically on building the capacity of Latino nonprofits, the Funders' Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities further serves HIP’s mission of strengthening Latino leadership, while at the same time increasing awareness about Latino issues and stimulating dialogue about how to better serve the Latino community and Latin America.

To date, through the Funders' Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities, HIP has raised nearly $35 million and has made grants to 427 Latino-led nonprofits across the Americas.

Programs offered:

Membership
HIP members bring innovation and an informed multi-cultural perspective to philanthropy. Extending across the Americas, our membership network is comprised of more than 550 grantmakers committed to creating vibrant, healthy Latino communities by investing in Latino leaders and by increasing resources for the Latino civil sector.

The Funders' Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities
In 2000, HIP launched a collaborative initiative of local, national and transnational funders to build capacity among small-to-medium-sized Latino nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and Latin America through technical assistance and grant making. As of July, 2007 the Collaborative has leveraged more than $35 million from 160 local, national and transnational funders in support of 427 Latino nonprofits in the US and Latin America.

Transnational Programs
HIP is an innovative leader among its global constituents. In 2001, HIP’s strategic plan listed Transnational Programs as one of its top priorities. By 2002, HIP’s first two Transnational sites had been launched. In Argentina, HIP’s partners include Bank Boston, Fundación Minetti, Telefónica de España and the University of Córdoba. In the Dominican Republic, HIP’s partners are the Fundación Falconbridge, the Levi Strauss Foundation, and another eleven local donors. HIP has recently launched two new programs focused on productive projects in Latin America that engage Latino diaspora communities and regions with high emigration rates. The first project is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank's Multi-Lateral Investment Fund, and will be implemented in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Nicaragua. The second project is funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and will focus on Mexican communities in Guanajuato and diaspora communities in the U.S.

Giving Partnerships for Strong Latino Communities

In 2007, HIP launched an exciting new initiative that engages individual donors and assists community foundations with outreach to individuals to increase giving to Latino communities. Participants in Giving Partnerships include community leaders, business owners, and families who have come together to invest in their community. Investments made by individuals are matched dollar-for-dollar through the HIP Funders’ Collaborative, leveraging substantial assets for Latino nonprofits and their leaders. All Giving Partnership grants are for capacity-building projects; they provide technical assistance, leadership training, and networking opportunities, which provide Latino organizations with new skills and greater visibility within the field of philanthropy. This initiative is being piloted through partnerships with the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado, a project of the Rose Community Foundation, and the Apoyo Fund, a project of the Westchester Community Foundation in New York.

Talent Bank
One of HIP's goals is to increase diversity within the field of philanthropy, and we have a variety of programs which focus on professional development. We are currently building a Talent Bank of our members which will be used by foundations and search firms when they are looking to fill staff and trustee positions. By helping organizations to better identify and locate talented individuals we hope to increase the overall diversity within the foundation community. Please check back here in the future for more information on the Talent Bank.

Latino Nonprofit Directory
HIP’s numerous relationships with Latino nonprofits have inspired us to develop a Latino Nonprofit Directory that includes organizations from across the United States and within Latin America.

Consultant Database
Informed by Funders’ Collaborative grantees, HIP funders, and HIP members we have compiled the HIP Consultant Database, a broad collection of consultant contact and specialization information. We hope that this much-needed resource will be an asset to the nonprofit field and expand access to culturally competent consultants.
