Sign our petition to support the people of Zimbabwe and jailed human rights activist Jestina Mukoko
The Southern African nation of Zimbabwe is in the throes of a humanitarian crisis. Rapid currency devaluation and record-breaking inflation are thrusting millions into acute poverty. A cholera epidemic that broke out in November has already caused more than 3,000 deaths and has affected another 60,000 people.
World leaders have been quick to condemn President Robert Mugabe and the ruling government but slow to respond to the mounting disaster. Instead of helping the people they serve, the Zimbabwean government has increased suffering with poor policy and violent crackdowns on civil society groups that criticize the lack of response. In December, police arrested Jestina Mukoko, the director of the Zimbabwe Peace Project and a member of Women of Zimbabwe Arise. She has been charged with conspiracy to overthrow the government and remains in prison. Furthermore, there is evidence she is being abused.
Take action now and encourage U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the U.S. State Department to put Zimbabwe on the Obama Administration’s agenda!
