Partner organization:
Dolores Huerta Foundation
Name of Grantee Organization:
Women's Foundation of California

To defeat this measure, the Women’s Foundation of California funded the Dolores Huerta Foundation with a $27,500 grant.

This funding enabled their grantee partner to build an alliance with the California Federation of Labor, resulting in them taking a position against Proposition 85, which was unprecedented nationally. In total, 150 organizations and community leaders joined the coalition of Latina/o community leaders and social justice allies against Proposition 85. This grassroots community organizing effort not only helped secure the defeat of this measure but also paved the way for future work in this area. The Women’s Foundation of California supported this partnership and has supported countless other strategic reproductive health and sexual rights grants since their inception in 1979.

The Women’s Foundation of California was the sole funder of this effort with Dolores Huerta Foundation and among the only institutional funders until recently. Their philanthropic advocacy has garnered them some attention and the Ms. Foundation has also recently made a grant to the Dolores Huerta Foundation. The Women’s Foundation of California’s continued partnership with the Dolores Huerta Foundation has broadened the impact of their grants, Dolores Huerta Foundation’s work and will ultimately lead to lasting systems change.
